Q. When my great-grandfather passed a way, we cleaned out his attic and found some great items. One thing we found was a J.C. Higgins baseball glove—I remember this name from when I was younger. The glove also has the signature “Alexander” in the pocket. Can you tell me who this “Alexander” was and when he played baseball?

A. After researching the Sears catalogs, we found the J.C. Higgins baseball glove you described on page 490 of the spring 1927 Chicago edition catalog. According to the catalog ad, the Alexander signature belonged to “G.C. Alexander,” otherwise known as Grover Cleveland Alexander (1887-1950), one of the game’s all-time greatest pitchers. From 1911 to 1930, Alexander played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals. His 373 wins and 90 shutouts remain National League records to this day, and he was a first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee in 1938. In 1952, Ronald Reagan portrayed Alexander in the movie The Winning Team.
