Q. Could you give me an idea of what bathing suits were like in the 1950s?

A. In order to get an idea of typical bathing suits from the 1950s, take a look at page 236 of the spring 1953 Chicago edition catalog. There are several examples of bathing suits, all of which are one-piece, and several of which have shirring on the front.
