Q. I have an old J.C. Higgins football from the 1950s. It is white with black stripes and has some sort of printed signature on it. The signature is faded and worn, but from what I can make out the first name is “Paul.” Could you please tell me more about this football, particularly whose signature might be on the ball?

A. In the 1950s, Sears sold footballs endorsed and autographed by Paul Hornung. A white football of your description appears in the fall 1958 Chicago edition catalog on page 1210. Hornung was a legendary running back for the Green Bay Packers (1957–1962, 1964–1966), who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986. While at the University of Notre Dame, Hornung won the Heisman Trophy as well as All-America honors.
